From the Principal
Greetings!

Saint Joseph Academy provides a high school experience that prepares students for the 21st century.  The world is changing at such a rapid pace that schools must prepare students for jobs that have yet to be invented.  More than ever, selecting an educational option that will give students 21st century skills is paramount.  What does this mean?

Thomas Friedman, in his best selling book The World is Flat, describes globalization.  The world has economically become a place where work can be moved anywhere, at any time, and can then be brought back together.  At the same time, millions of people have entered this new world-wide economy.  When you finish your education, you will both compete and collaborate with people around the world; many of these people, from places like India, China, Eastern Europe, are very eager to do whatever it takes to participate in the new global economy.  They recognize that work is no longer a place you go, it is a thing you do from anywhere in the world.

In order to be successful in such a rapidly changing world, students need many skills that are specific to the 21st century:  intellectual curiosity; cognitive skills and flexibility; tolerance of ambiguity; the ability to synthesize knowledge across disciplines; cultural sophistication; interpersonal sensibilities; and the ability to collaborate within diversity.  At Saint Joseph Academy, we are very sensitive to making sure our students work on honing all of these skills.

With our college block schedule, the students do not have to sit and listen to a lecture before they run to the next class.  Instead, class time is spent analyzing real world problems in predictable and unpredictable contexts.  The students learn to analyze the barrage of information that is available at the stroke of a key on their computer.  We weave information about other cultures and diversity throughout all curricula.  We offer Mandarin Chinese as a part of our world language department.  We actively teach interpersonal skills (how to work with others) in our many collaborative projects.  We want our young women to emerge as competent leaders, yet full of compassion, respect for the earth, and appreciation for each other - qualities taught through Catholic social teachings and the spirituality of the Congregation of Saint Joseph.

At Saint Joseph Academy, we have the greatest of interest in ensuring that the next generation of leadership be incredibly well prepared.

All the best,
