Saint Joseph Academy History

Saint Jospeh Academy History

Saint Joseph Academy was established by the Congregation of Saint Joseph on Starkweather Avenue on the south side of Cleveland in 1890.The purpose of the Academy was to promote education, science and art.

In 1898 Saint Joseph Academy was moved to its site on Rocky River Drive, a beautiful parcel of land that flows into the Cleveland Metroparks.Classes were first held in the Motherhouse of the Sisters until the current Academy was built in 1928.Until the mid 1930’s, elementary and high school students attended, as well as girls and boys.

A major addition to the building, The Academy Center, was opened in 1996.This portion of the school houses a large gymnasium, locker rooms, a fitness room, a spacious arcade and a wonderful music room for the performing arts program. The addition of the Rawlings Track and Field in 2002 allowed the Athletic Department to expand its soccer and track programs.

The Sisters of the Congregation of Saint Joseph have sponsored Saint Joseph Academy since its founding. They have given spiritual, academic and financial support to the Academy for over 115 years.
