Yes, it is Rocket Science!

ROCKET ENGINEER AND SAINT JOSEPH ACADEMY GRADUATE

SPEAKS TO STUDENTS AT THE ACADEMY

CLEVELAND: 112509: Saint Joseph Academy graduate Therese Dever Griebel '84, who served as the Manufacturing Division Chief on the ARES 1-X project, visited the Academy last Monday, to speak with students about her involvement in the ARES 1-X rocket program, her job at NASA and about careers in engineering. Students from math and pre-engineering listened as she explained the ARES project and its importance to the future of space exploration. "The ARES rocket will replace the space shuttle in future missions to the space station and will allow astronauts to return to the Moon," according to Griebel. She continued to explain how her team constructed their portion of the rocket.

As an electrical engineer, Griebel is responsible for all of the Glenn Research Center's manufacturing in support of space exploration, space science and aeronautics, including the upper stage simulator. She previously was deputy chief of the office managing Glenn's work on the Ares 1's service module, which contains propulsion, communication and life support equipment for the astronaut crew.

When asked how she decided to become an electrical engineer she said, "When I got to college I thought that I would become a nurse, like my mother, but I wanted to see what else I could do. My brother was studying electrical engineering so I took a course and that's how it happened."
