LASTING MEMORIES FOR TWO MEMBERS OF THE SAINT JOSEPH ACADEMY CLASS OF 1934

Today was a special day at Saint Joseph Academy as the school celebrated Lucille Ursem Day. Currently, Ms. Ursem is living at the Welsh Home and receiving additional care through Harbor Light Hospice. "Lucille was a member of the class of 1934,” according to Mary Ann Fischer ’66 Director of Alumnae. "When I received a call from Harbor Light Hospice saying that Lucille’s wish was to come back to Saint Joseph Academy we had to make it happen." In addition to touring the school and seeing many of the students and sharing stories about her school days at Saint Joseph Academy, Lucille had lunch with a former classmate Eileen McGorray Barrett, and was entertained by Cecilia’s Song, Saint Joseph Academy’s acclaimed a cappella choir. "When the choir sang the Alma Mater, Mrs. Barrett reached over and the former classmates held hands and sang along,” said Mary Ann Fischer.

After graduating from Saint Joseph Academy, Ms. Ursem went on to study at the Spencerian School later know as Dyke College. After working in business for many years, she began volunteering at St. John’s Hospital and continued to do so until her health declined. Over the years she volunteered more than 14 thousand hours. "She has also supported Saint Joseph Academy for many years. Whether it was attending reunions or other events, supporting the annual fund or any number of things, Lucille was always involved,” responded Mary Ann Fischer. Her brother Clarence said, "Lucille always loved Saint Joseph Academy and has 80 years of fond memories.”

When asked what she would tell the students of today, she replied quickly, "Make the most of the opportunities you have here at Saint Joseph Academy and appreciate this wonderful gift.” Here classmate Mrs. Barrett said she would tell them, "Make lots of friends!” Ms. Ursem is in a program called "Dare to Dream” that was created by Harbor Light Hospice to provide special moments and memories for patients and their loved ones. According to Susan Pinter the Community and Professional Liaison for Harbor Light Hospice, "This was a great day. I am sure that Lucille has made many wonderful memories of today, I know that I have.”
