This course is being offered to girls who will be enrolled as eighth graders in elementary schools during the 2019-2020 school year. Students will be experiencing a high school level class for the 2019-2020 academic year in Honors Algebra I, and upon successful completion, will receive one high school credit in mathematics which should transfer to any high school. The course is intended to accelerate eighth grade students who are talented in mathematics, so that they have the opportunity to take five full years of mathematics in high school.

Qualifications: Because the Honors Algebra I course is an honors high school course, we recommend that parents and students consider carefully the following points. The course is designed for:
  • Students who have maintained an A or high B in grade school math
  • Students who achieved at least 85th percentile in math on standardized tests
  • Students who are highly motivated
  • Students who have the ability to work independently
  • Students who have excellent attendance records
Once in the class, a student in the Honors Algebra I course should maintain an A or B grade point average.

Credit: Because the course complies with section 3313.603G of the Ohio Revised Code, we are able to award high school credit to those students who successfully complete the course. This credit should be accepted by any high school and should enable the student to begin her second year of high school mathematics as a ninth grader. However, the decision to grant high school credit for the class from schools other than Saint Joseph Academy will depend on the policies of those schools. In addition, at the end of the course, all students are required to take the Ohio Department of Education Algebra I state test at Saint Joseph Academy.

When & Where: Instruction will take place both online, through a program from Edgenuity, and also in face-to-face classroom time.

Classroom sessions will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7–7:45 a.m. during the school year at Saint Joseph Academy. The start date, calendar and class details will be sent to registered students during the summer.

A licensed Saint Joseph Academy mathematics teacher will oversee the online course and will guide students during the in-classroom sessions. Students will be expected to provide their own transportation. They will also need a TI 84 or TI 84 Plus graphing calculator for the class. There is both a minimum and a maximum class size requirement. Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

After the June 17, 2019 initial registration, students will be accepted if space permits. Parents and students can find a demo of the Edgenuity program at www.edgenuity.com.

Cost & Registration: The tuition charge is $350.00. The tuition must be paid in full by August 1, 2019.
