Performing Arts Provides Note of Inspiration

With hard work and a deep commitment to ensuring quality music instruction continued, the Performing Arts Department took on the challenges posed by COVID-19.
Instead of the usual concert programming, the Performing Arts Department made the decision to host a ‘Mini-Series’ for this academic year. Smaller groups of students and shorter performance times allow for appropriate spacing, more creative use of the Academy’s campus and experiences in a variety of concert styles. The entire Mini-Series was constructed to provide COVID-19 safe experiences for students, their families, faculty and staff. Other facets of this series include the live-streamed Christmas orchestra concert, Chorale concert in January and the open floor plan Winterguard and Dance concert in February.

In October, the Performing Arts Department presented the first two concerts in this Mini-Series (featuring the Concert and Jazz Bands) named “Backyard Blossom.” that took place on the Howley Terrace outside of the Dining Hall. Families enjoyed a lovely evening listening to the students’ performances from the comfort of their lawn chairs on our beautiful back campus grounds.

The fall play was also reimagined into a virtual show, She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms. This experience led to the cast and crew learning how to perform and produce a play using Zoom, and culminates in a recorded performance on the big screen at the Aut-O-Rama Drive-In Theater on Sunday, November 22, 7:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per car. There are no advance sales. Please pay cash at the door. Box office will open at 6:30 p.m.

While it may look very different this year, and possibly for years to come, the Performing Arts program at Saint Joseph Academy is essential to a robust educational experience. Bravo, students, on a job well done!
