Two Students Received Awards For Their Service to ‘The Dear Neighbor’

Madison was recognized with an Honor Award for a second consecutive year.
Two students were recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and InnerView in the Fifth Annual National Community Service Impact Awards. Madison Roth ’23 (granddaughter of Marie Henki Roth '54+, sister of Julia Roth '21) and Shannon Gardner ’22 (granddaughter of Betty Ann Distefan Fergus '47+ and Patriciann McNulty Gardner '52). 
 
were honored through this program, which is open to all U.S. high school students. The program is designed to connect student community service activities, skill development and personal commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of peace and prosperity for people and the planet to transform our world, now and in the future.

She completed more than 40 service hours across at least eight different activities from June 2021 through April 2022. The majority of Madison’s volunteering took place at Gigi’s Playhouse in Lakewood, which offers free educational, therapeutic-based and career development programs for individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community.
 
Shannon received a Merit Award for a second consecutive year for completing more than 20 service hours across at least four activities. She volunteered her time to a number of Saint Joseph Academy programs and events, including Celebrate the Academy, Grand Reunion and serving as an instructor at the Academy’s summer tennis camps.
 
We applaud these young women for sharing their talents and serving as an example of what it means to ‘serve the dear neighbor.’
