The varsity tennis team faced Avon Lake High School in a home match at Jefferson Park on September 10. The Jaguars, following a three-match winning streak, kept up competitive play against the Shoregals but were unable to pull out a win in the end, dropping a 4-1 match. Avon Lake’s win improved their record to 7-2 on the season.
Junior captain Hannah Schuette went up against Rachel Johnson at first singles and posted a 6-3, 6-4 win. Schuette quickly won the first set by gaining an early lead, but the beginning of the second set proved to be more of a challenge. Johnson took a lead halfway through the second set, but Schuette fought back to win the match.

Freshman Cassie Van Etten played hard against Brianna Tomko from Avon Lake before falling 6-4, 6-0. The first set began with several rallies, and the point-for-point play continued into the second set. Despite the impressive play on both sides of the net, Van Etten fell short of victory.

Juniors Caroline Saracina and Maeve Chambers faced Lauren Sabo and Hannah Ramirez at second doubles. Although Saracina and Chambers were quick to react and kept up communication throughout the match, they fell 6-2, 6-1.

Schuette stated, “Today was a tough match overall against a tough team.” However, she went on to say, “This loss will only improve us, and the next game will be ours.”
