The varsity team faced rivals Magnificat in a home match at Jefferson Park on September 24. This was also senior night for the Jaguars, and seniors Caroline Davis and Colleen Fitzgerald were given yellow roses in honor of their years on the tennis team. The energy-filled match was a great display of what the team has been practicing all season even though they fell 3-2 to Magnificat’s “B” team.
Junior Hannah Schuette posted a 6-2, 6-4 win against Emily Coyne at first singles. They were point for point in the beginning of the first set, with Schuette only leading 3-2 after a succession of intense rallies. She kept the lead to take the first set and carried that momentum into the second set, which was also very close.
Freshman Cassie Van Etten posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles against Emily Marshall, a senior player for Magnificat. She defended her side of the court in rallies to gain and keep a lead for most of the match.
Senior Colleen Fitzgerald teamed up with her sister, sophomore Bridget Fitzgerald, at first doubles against Victoria Price and Hannah Klubnik. The Fitzgerald sisters worked well together on the court, communicating through the fast-paced match. They played well and were point for point with Price and Klubnik in the first set, posting a 6-4 win but fell 6-2, 6-4 in the last two sets.
In only her second game since returning to play after an injury, Colleen Fitzgerald was a standout player in this senior night match.
Coach Dan Mitoff said, “Despite being out for six weeks this season, she still came to every match and supported the team. Her dedication was evident in how hard she worked to get back on the court this season. She came back last week, and it seemed like she hadn't missed a beat.”
Senior Caroline Davis and junior Maeve Chambers also played well in an exhibition match. They took the first set with an effortless 6-1 win but lost their lead in the last two sets, falling 6-1, 6-4.
Coach Dan Mittoff said of senior Caroline Davis, “She has been a hard worker, who has gotten better each season. Caroline has worked her way up through the lineup and made her varsity debut this year with a victory against Lakewood.”
