Over the weekend the cross country team split up, their varsity runners taking part in the Midwest All-Catholic Championships in Dayton while their junior varsity and open race teams traveled to the Todd Clark Cloverleaf Invitational in Lodi. The team continued their impressive season record, taking 8th place at the Midwest All-Catholic with second-place winner Sydney Seymour ‘17 blasting through her own school record with a time of 18:31. The junior varsity placed 16th place at their race.
Sacred Heart’s Kathleen Simms narrowly beat Seymour by a margin of only six seconds, making her the race’s overall winner. Sophomore Maggie Wagner finished not far behind these frontrunners, finishing her race with a personal season record of 19:08.

When asked her thoughts on Wagner and Seymour and their performances as the team’s top runners this season, assistant coach Kelly Gallagher replied that they were impressing her with their ability to “consistently lower their times and run tough every weekend.”

The rest of the varsity team was scattered throughout the remainder of the Midwest All-Catholic’s rankings: Caitlyn Walsh ‘18 in 50th place (21:20), sophomore Emily Conway on her heels in 59th (21:33), senior Monica Hahn ending in 77th (22:09), Claudia Becker ‘18 taking 82nd (22:43), with senior Bridget McGuire finishing out the varsity lineup in 102th place with a time of 23:19.

Both races the cross country team competed in were marked by a large number of personal records, an outstanding 16 of their runners able to beat their previous best race times.

Because of his team’s impressive performance, Head Coach Fred Kieser named a total of eighteen girls that stood out to him as having run especially well during their races, including juniors Alana Vovk and Rachael Ialacci and freshmen Tuesday Hinkle and Katie White.

Because of the multiple races they participated in, junior varsity and varsity each picked their own Runner of the Week to commemorate after the race. Senior Monica Hahn won the title for varsity because of the positive attitude she brings to the team each week and her ranking as one of the team’s top five runners, despite it being her first season running for cross country. The majority of junior varsity members nominated Jocelyn Perkins ‘18, due to her personal record and the fact that she has run well in her races for multiple weeks in a row.

It’s important to remember that these races are only preparation for what the team is working to face in a few weeks, as Coach Kieser was quick to point out: “The most important competitions of the season are in the later part of October. That is when our junior varsity kids will run their best and when the varsity competes in the postseason.” His goals for the team as these competitions draw closer is to “develop some younger runners, get some injured runners back, and fine tune our top runners when that time comes,” he said.
