On Saturday, the Jags took on the Mayfield Wildcats in their second home game of the season. The varsity entered the game undefeated with a 3-0 record and left that way, too, securing a 70-49 victory. The Jaguars couldn’t get much going early on but came back to score 32 fourth quarter points on their way to the victory.
The Jaguars dominated the fourth quarter, scoring a total of 32 points. Kathleen DeCarlo started the quarter off with a quick four points, after which Colleen Drellishak took over, scoring a six straight points for the Jags. From there Ellen Vichill, Colleen and Molly Neitzel, Molly Dever, and Gia DiMassa all brought in a barrage of points, mainly from layups scored on turnovers which led to the win.
Colleen Neitzel led the way for the Jaguars with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Vichill continued her strong play as she scored 17. It marked Vichill’s fourth-straight game with at least 12 points.
When asked about her team’s performance, Head Coach Maggie Ferrando had a lot to say. “I told my team, that was a completely different team I saw in the second half. That’s the standard we want to set for ourselves: ready to go, running, pushing, getting physical.”
Coach Ferrando also had high praise for Vichill and Drellishak, saying that Vichill kept the team in the game during the first half and scored some nice points during the second, showing a good deal of heart and passion. As for Drellishak, Coach Ferrando said that she is capable of so much and showed it when she took over in the second half.
The Jags take on the Magnificat Blue Streaks next at Magnificat high school on Wednesday, December 9th at 7:30.
