Student Selected for Youth Engagement Committee

Congratulations to Calissa Shillinger ’28 on her selection to the City of Brooklyn’s Youth Engagement and Succession (YES) Committee. Only five students were selected for the new committee, which will provide guidance to Brooklyn’s City Council on issues/matters related to youth.
“I wanted to be on the committee for the experience of learning how a government works,” Calissa shared. “Many people, teens especially, really have no clue of everything that goes on around them to keep the world running. I wanted to know about what was actually happening in my community. It seems like most people never really pay attention to local and even national governments until something is directly affecting them. I think it's vital to have an understanding of what's going on, how communities function, who controls what, and what you have the power to change.”

Calissa shared that this is the first time the City of Brooklyn has created a committee for youth. “I'm honored to get to help lay the foundation of an eventually impactful program,” Calissa shared.
