Three Students Completing NASA High School Capstone Projects

Working with the NASA Glenn Research Center, Mae Wimbiscus ’26, Ella Babcock ’27 and Sophia Hwodeky ’27 are conducting their own research projects as part of the NASA High School Capstone Project.
Mae Wimbiscus ’26 is completing the topic, Remote Sensing of Harmful Algal Blooms. “I chose the topic Remote Sensing of Harmful Algal Blooms because I was drawn to the 3D design aspect. Learning how to 3D print is a skill I’ve wanted to develop, and this project gives me the chance to do that,” Mae shared. “I’m really excited about this project, especially because I’ll be working directly with NASA educators and learning how to problem solve in a scientific setting.”

Ella Babcock ’27 and Sophia Hwodeky ’27 are completing the topic, Simulated Lunar Operations – How can we use tires without air?. “I chose the Lunar Operations project because I’m deeply interested in space exploration and the technology that allows rovers to collect and transmit data from the planets to Earth,” Sophia shared. Ella shared the following about her capstone project, “This project allows me to design and fabricate a wheel that does not inflate and can function in an environment with little or no atmosphere. I chose to complete this project because I love the idea of being able to bring an idea or design into real life using 3D printing.”

The students have until the end of the school year to complete their projects.
