Art Retreat Explores School Year’s Theme of "Empathic Justice"

Through large group activities, small group discussions, and independent time for creating art pieces, students attending this year’s Art Retreat discovered the ways in which art helps us develop empathy and allows us to amplify the voices of those who often go unheard. Participants used art to investigate where God is calling us to use our voices to build a more empathetic and just world.
Anna Maria Trakas ’27, who attended the retreat, shared the following reflection, “Art is a hobby of mine that I have had for almost my whole life. Any moment I get, I try to do art in some type of way. Whether it be coloring, sketching, or even drawing pieces that come to mind. I wanted to attend this art retreat because I knew that it was a retreat that I would really enjoy, and I did. Not only did this retreat give me a really good chance to learn more about others, but it gave me a moment to learn more about myself. My favorite moment from this retreat is when the whole group was able to go outside and take a quick walk and really soak in the moment. I was able to connect nature to art, and make the most out of it. During the retreat, I was able to make some art pieces that were really fun and exciting to make.”
