The varsity tennis team took on Aurora High School in a home match at Jefferson Park on August 27. The Jaguars played well but fell just short as they dropped a 3-2 match to the Greenmen. With the win, Aurora improved to 10-1 on the season.
Junior captain Hannah Schuette, playing at the #1 singles position, set the pace for the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win. The win improved Schuette’s record to 5-1 so far on the season.

The Jaguars other victory in the match came at first doubles. Junior Angela Cicero and sophomore Bridget Fitzgerald rallied from a 6-1 loss in the first set to post a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 come-from-behind win.

Jaguars Head Coach Dan Mitoff commended the team for keeping up the energy and confidence throughout the match. “We came back from being down a set in a few of the matches,” said Mitoff. “We did extremely well coming from behind, especially for a young team. We only have two seniors on the roster and they have showed maturity throughout the season.”

After her three-set match, Cicero commented on the team’s play saying, “We all played our hearts out on the court today and we hope that can continue throughout the rest of our season.”

Freshman Cassie Van Etten, one of two freshmen on the varsity team, fought through three sets of competitive play at second singles before Nicole Eastman from Aurora took the win.

Second doubles, made up of juniors Maeve Chambers and Caroline Saracina, won the first set of their match 6-3 but couldn’t hold off Aurora in the final two sets and fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
