Jaguars Finish Third in Tri-Match

On August 26, the Saint Joseph Academy varsity golf team competed against rival Magnificat and a very strong Hathaway Brown team in a Tri-Match on the back nine at Sweet Briar Golf Course in Avon.  The Jaguars finished in third place with a score of 198 as they trailed Hathaway Brown (164) and Magnificat (175).

The six players representing the Jaguars consisted of: Alicia Abele (Senior), Hannah Hill (Senior), Kristin Hetrick (Junior), Isabelle Robertson (Junior), Clare Tirpak (Senior), and Emily Welshhans (Junior).

The cold, rainy evening was not ideal golfing weather but that didn’t stop the girls from having a great first match of the season.  Leading the way for the Jaguars was Abele, a four year varsity player for the Jaguars.  She played a solid match, carding two pars and making some great shots to pace the team.

Robertson, a third-year member of the program but a first-year varsity member has been a pleasant surprise for Coach Joe Battaglia and has moved up to the fourth spot on the varsity ear after spending  her first two years playing JV.  Robertson shot a personal best (49) by sinking long putts and taking each shot at a time.

Coach Battaglia is amazed with her progression in the sport and sees a lot of potential in the team for the upcoming season.  “We have a lot of new starters and they will only get better as they go along.  We have lots of room for improvement, but were so proud of Isabelle and the team as a whole,” said Battaglia.

Though the team finished in third place, with more practice and experience they should have a pretty successful season.

Tirpark, a senior on the team, loves the team and said, “I’m very excited to make this season our best one yet for me and the rest of the seniors.”
