Seymour Claims District Title; Wagner Advances to Regionals

Saturday marked the start of the post-season for the varsity members of the cross country team. The girls traveled to Medina to take part in the Medina District Meet, a challenging race noted by Head Coach Fred Kieser who stated, “Without a doubt our district was the deepest and most difficult in the entire state.” Despite the difficulty they faced, the varsity held their own, securing two spots in the upcoming regional meet.
The first spot was claimed by sophomore Sydney Seymour, who closed out her race first for varsity, with a time of 18:35. While it wasn’t fast enough for her to break another school record, it brought Seymour the district title! Junior Maggie Wagner followed not far behind her, closing the race in fourth place and posting a time of 18:59. Because she ran her best race of the season, her teammates nominated Wagner for Runner of the Meet. Coach Kieser agreed with the decision, acknowledging that she had impressed him. “Maggie beat some very good runners who had beaten her earlier in the season,” he said. Both runners raced well enough to qualify for the regional meet next Saturday, with the rest of the top 16 finishers of the meet.

The rest of the varsity members, while not securing one of the coveted top spots, ran impressive races against their tough opponents. Caitlyn Walsh ‘18 was the next to finish, closing her race in 36th place and posting a time of 21:02. Shortly after, the other three members followed her in: Emily Conway ‘18 took 49th place (21:47), junior Alana Vovk finished in 53rd (22:02), and Claudia Becker ‘18 closed out the varsity line-up in 57th place (22:36).

While Coach Kieser didn’t dare try to predict how Seymour and Wagner will fare at the regional meet, he had hopeful words about the ability of both of his qualifying runners. “We run at the Tiffin regional where the top 16 qualify to the state meet. Sydney qualified last year as an individual, and Maggie made it the year before. They both have a chance to qualify if they have a good day,” he noted.
